After being in San Francisco for 4 days, I have some tips on things to do and see in this amazingly chill city. Okay obviously, I’m not going to tell you some of the main things to do like go to Alcatraz, see pier 39 and Fishermans wharf, because everyone knows about them, I mean smaller less known things to do because the hidden/less known places are always better.
To even out the junk food eating, doing a bike ride over the golden gate bridge is so worth it. Why get a lift to the bridge and just walk over and back when you can exercise way more and it doesn’t even feel like it, okay maybe a little up the hills! I went with a company called Blazing saddles. That only costs $32USD (as per 03/02/2020), however, if you have an ISIC, IYIC or ITIC you can get 20% off your ticket price (i recommend getting a card and it only costs you $30aud to sign up). You get to watch a super corny video, then get a helmet and bike fitted and they send you on your way with a map. There are so many locations that you can hire them from, and the big main shop is on Hyde street and if you cant return it by 6:30 pm when they close, they have a 24/7 garage underneath the shop where you can return it to any time.
If you have ever been to San Francisco and not visited Sausalito you must! The small town across the Golden gate bridge reminded me of a town that should be in Italy. The name sounds Italian and even the small houses looked Italian. To top the Italian feel off I even had pizza for lunch, and it was so big. You can use the bike you hired to continue through to this small town, and if your not up for the 15km bike ride back to the bike shop you can get a ferry from Sausalito to Fishermans wharf for $13usd. Sausalito has some sea lions in the bay that can put on a show, and if your lucky enough to find a nice restaurant that has a bay view I 100% recommend it. If you cant find one you can always get some takeaway and sit outside near the ferry. There are some amazing lolly and chocolate shops that are worth a stop at. Man, I can already see my self putting on so much weight from all the pizza, lollies and alcohol.
Another crazy thing I did which I normally wouldn’t do something like this, is going to the San Francisco Dungeons. It’s not a real dungeon but the actors play it out to be and that you will be trapped there. I am super jumpy and scared of things like this, but I was so glad I did it and there wasn’t to many jump scares. If you actually pay attention to what they are telling you, you will learn some super cool facts, unlike me who was on high alert so I wasn’t even listening to anything they were saying. I highly recommend this even if you are a scaredy-cat like me. This is good for anyone 13+ and up, and they even have a short drop ride at the end which was well worth it. The Dungeon is located on 145 Jefferson street, near Fishermans wharf. A ticket costs $18usd for an hour live-action show and for an additional $10usd you can go into Madame Tussauds. They even have a cute instagramable wall you can pose in front of because you can’t take photos downstairs.
A couple of shops down from the San Francisco Dungeon, is an amazing chocolate store, that has homemade ice cream, taffy and speciality chocolates. If you’re in America you have to try saltwater taffy at least once. Any lolly shop or should I say candy shop, you go into will have at least 10 different taffy flavours, most shops will have upwards of 30 different flavours. My Favorite flavour of taffy was caramel cheesecake, but oh do they have some weird flavours, like maple bacon, fried chicken and Neopolitan. This chocolate place not only did it have taffy, but as the name says it has a shit tonne of chocolate things. I got a massive homemade peanut butter cup, and oh it was so good. Other things they had were fudge, brownies, and all things chocolate. The taste of there food is sensational and I think everyone needs to visit this cute shop.
San Francisco is an awesome kind of hippy town that you can smell someone smoking weed every kilometre but is full of history and alive with things to do.
